IPL 2021: Most Overpaid Players in IPL History

The 2021 IPL Player Auction is a little over two weeks away. A lot of money is about to be spent on selecting the players that are still available for purchase. There are quite a few star cricketers, both Indian and International, who are going to be available in the auction. Since the world’s richest cricket league started, a lot of players have earned a whole lot of money. Some players such as Mahendra Singh Dhoni, AB de Villiers and Rohit Sharma have proven completely worth the money their teams have spent on them because of their stellar performances in the IPL. However, there are quite a few other players who have failed to live up to the expectations and haven’t performed as well as their price tag.

Here Are the Five Most Overpaid Players in IPL

Andrew Flintoff

Andrew Flintoff’s IPL career never really took off. The charismatic England all-rounder was snapped up by the Chennai Super Kings for the 2009 edition of the IPL. Flintoff fetched a very high price of $1.55 million, which made him the joint most expensive player of all time (that has since changed). Despite all the hype and a stellar career with England up to that point, Andrew Flintoff was a total disappointment in the IPL.

Glenn Maxwell

The Australian all-rounder, who was bought for a hefty price tag of Rs 10.75 crore, only scored 108 runs in 11 innings for Kings XI Punjab. That is a really poor performance for a player who was paid so much money to play.

Yuvraj Singh

A true legend of Indian cricket, Yuvraj Singh performed spectacularly well for Kings XI Punjab in the beginning. But over the years, he failed to do well in numerous IPL seasons. In 2016, Yuvraj got Rs 16 crore, but he contributed only 248 runs with the bat in 14 matches.

Tymal Mills

The Royal Challengers Bangalore picked up the fabled England pace machine for an astronomical price of 12 crores. However, he only managed to play five IPL matches and took a grand total of five wickets.

Thisara Perera

The Sri Lankan all-rounder has been a journeyman in the IPL. he has played for six different franchises and teams spent more than 3 crores on him for three straight seasons. However, he only scored 422 runs in 37 matches and only scalped 31 wickets. All that money never really amounted to any notable performance.
